Tanzania, diplomats join Palestine in marking Nakba anniversary

Correspondence, Tanzania

The Embassy of the State of Palestine in Tanzania on Friday commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Nakba with a diplomatic screening of the Oscar-nominated film Palestine 36 in Dar es Salaam.

The event, held on May 16, was attended by Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr. Ngwaru Jumanne Maghembe, as well as members of the diplomatic corps, religious leaders, academics, media representatives, and civil society stakeholders.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Tanzania, H.E. Salam Abu Sharar, described the film as an important historical and cultural reflection on the Palestinian experience, historical memory, and human dignity and justice.

Ambassador Abu Sharar said the Nakba of 1948 remains a defining moment in Palestinian history, referring to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the establishment of the State of Israel.

He called on the international community to uphold international law and support efforts to achieve peace, justice, and the protection of Palestinian rights.

“The film serves as a living testimony and a reminder of the importance of safeguarding historical memory and human dignity,” Ambassador Abu Sharar said.

The Palestinian envoy also expressed appreciation to the Government of Tanzania and President Samia Suluhu Hassan for what he described as Tanzania’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause.

According to the embassy, ties between Tanzania and Palestine continue to be shaped by historical solidarity rooted in anti-colonial and liberation values associated with Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic, is commemorated annually by Palestinians and marks the displacement that accompanied the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict.
